Australian prisoners of war
- Over 22,000 Australians became prisoners of war of the Japanese
- At the end of the war only 13,872 of the POWs were recovered
- The Germans and Italians captured Australians during the Mediterranean and Middle East campaigns
- Many worked on the Thai-Burma Railway
- They were starved, deprived of medications and forced to work extremely long hours with punishments if they didn't complete their work.
